We’ve added a Saturday Night Ticket to Art of Community! 

Join us for an evening of connection, celebration, and musical inspirations!
On Saturday night we welcome folks to come for dinner and the evening’s festivities:

WHEN: Saturday, Sept. 22nd during the Art of Community Conference
WHERE: Occidental, CA
WHAT: 

• Dinner starts at 5pm, and we’ll be holding a Sacred Supper at 6 in the Healing Temple. Sacred Supper is a warmly focalized, heart and spirit centered gathering with conscious conversation over a meal.
• At 7:30 Caroline Estes will be receiving the Geoph Kozeny Communitarian Award, a lifetime achievement honor, at this year’s Art of Community for her dedication to community.
• 8pm join us for a fast-paced, high-energy benefit auction for the Fellowship for Intentional Community, publisher of Communities Directory and Communities magazine. Proceeds will help the FIC continue to bring the exciting news of community to a hungry world.
• 9pm Bring your instruments, bring your voice, bring your prayers – bring it! Mystic Dance Party and Music Jam in a lovely setting of a redwood grove. DJ Lovabeth and Living Sound share a high vibration dance mix and improvisational live music jam.
• 10:30-midnight: Campfire Song Circles and Musical Sharing!

Tickets for Saturday evening only are $40, lodging NOT included. You’ll then be able to choose only the Saturday special evening ticket on the additional items page of registration.

For as you know, gatherings such as this are a cooperative effort. We could not possibly get the word out without help, and when it comes to outreach, there is just nothing like word of mouth and the connections made in one on one conversations. We count on many volunteers and participants to tell others about Art of Community, and we even give you outreach materials to use. Plus there are many local organizations and businesses which help us out. It’s an amazing display of community support, and not just the community local to the event, but the Community with a big “C”- those who are committed to the Communities Movement and care about strengthening it. This year we’ve add 2 tours to the schedule of communities nearby the event site:

Green Valley Village

and

Occidental Arts and Ecology Center
(Sowing Circle Community)

 These are great opportunities to see intentional communities in person, to connect with members and ask questions, and to be inspired by the spaces people have nurtured cooperatively. 

You can tour both communities on Friday before AoC begins– GVV is only 10 minutes from OAEC, which is less than 10 minutes from the Art of Community site! You’ll even have time to stop in the charming town of Occidental for some lunch before heading to the event for the 2pm registration check in!

There is not a shuttle for these tours- you must drive yourself or self-organize for ridesharing. Please do not arrive at Westminster Woods prior to 2pm.

This Thurs. Aug. 2nd at 2pm Pacific time FIC’s Art of Community facilitator and community advocate Cassandra Ferrera will be on Caroline Casey’s “Visionary Activist” radio show on Berkeley’s KPFA, the first community supported radio station in the US.

The topic of discussion: the ways in which we gather in community, the changing model of gatherings, and the importance of events like AoC for social change. It’s the KPFA fund drive- during the show you can make a premium donation and received items such as a ticket to Art of Community or a Communities magazine subscription.

In 1974 Monan’s Rill grew out of conversations between friends and acquaintances who were searching for a greater sense of community amongst themselves, as well as a physical place for this community to take root and grow. They have a long history of building community with each other while being of service to the world.

Intentional Communities arise from and for a variety of reasons, but the common threads involve people connecting in a place, and with a shared purpose. Monan’s Rill’s Intention as stated on their website:

“Most of us have come of age in a society that emphasizes competition, materialism and self-enhancement. We feel that this has encouraged isolation and alienation. We see cooperation and a spirit of mutual support as highly desirable alternatives.

We try to recognize and cherish the different skills and insights of each individual. We are committed to helping and encouraging one another. We believe that successful community requires an intentional commitment. We have all committed ourselves to one another as a chosen family, and get together in both formal and informal gatherings.

As a group, we have concerns about the social chaos around us. Each of us tries to reach out from our relative security to do what we can.We do not claim to have the solutions to the world’s problems or even our own. We believe we are taking steps in the right direction, and know that good things are happening here.”

Following the National Cohousing Conference in Oakland June 13-17, the FIC and Oakland Morehouse invite you to a fun opportunity to connect with community minded folks, enjoy some good food and local jazz music, learn about the wealth of community oriented resources offered by the Fellowship for Intentional Community, and hear about the Art of Community immersive conference gathering in Occidental, CA. 

Representatives of intentional communities from around the US will be in attendance to share stories and information about the growing Communities Movement and life in cooperative culture. 

Food provided via in kind donations from local markets and organic gardens. In addition we ask that you bring a snack or beverage to share.

Bay Area jazz musicians provide the grooves!

This is a fundraising event to promote the Art of Community conference and raise funds for scholarships for event participants. AoC offers scholarships and discounted tickets to the majority of their attendees. Please join us in supporting this great cause and celebrating the concept of living “in community”. 

Hosted by Oakland Morehouse, a 44 year old intentional community formed with the goal of pleasurable group living. They are a cooperative household of people spanning multiple generations living in a purple Victorian home in the Lake Merritt neighborhood of Oakland.

Following the FIC’s Art of Community main conference weekend, we will draw together the folks with a fire in their belly about making a difference in the world- people who offer the heart and tools to inspire cooperative culture, who are committed to social change via the vehicle of community, and who seek higher levels of collaboration with other organizations and intentional communities.

The Summit is a meeting of minds and hearts involving representatives from various communities and organizations committed to social change. It is also open to public observation and participation.
