- facilitated by Carol Swann and India Harville

Carol and India will expand on their weekend workshop entitled “What’s Rank and Privilege Got to Do With It?” by exploring various dynamics involved in group conflict:
Conflict is scary to most of us. Culturally we are not taught tools to deal with conflict, to think of conflict as negative and lastly, to end up in polarities, digging our heals deeper into our own “sides” even if we have been seasoned community members! Mindell coined the term “Deep Democracy” to refer to an approach that “believes in the inherent importance of all parts of ourselves and all viewpoints in the world around us to be heard”. We will learn how EACH position or “role” in a community issue is not only valuable but is INSIDE of each of us. We will learn a specific method of embodied role switching which will allow us to understand that which might normally feel impossible. We will also learn a set of Worldwork tools that supports an awareness of the container in which EVERYONE is considered a “Participant/Facilitator” in their own unique way. “Worldwork” commonly deals with hot issues such as: power dynamics, race, privilege, ageism etc. and how the personal relates to the political.

During the Art of Community weekend conference John will be doing a shorter version of this workshop to give you an overview of Sociocracy. Last year he presented during our open space marketplace and was so well received that many participants asked that we formally include him this year and offer a more in depth opportunity for study and experience of the process.
This experiential workshop explores how we organize ourselves to get things done, focusing on Sociocracy (a.k.a. Dynamic Governance). Sociocracy is a whole systems full-featured design for self-governance. It is suitable for any group, organization, business, cooperative or other collection of people who want to organize and govern themselves effectively and efficiently using equivalence and transparency, optimizing group intelligence and wisdom while retaining individual similarities and differences.
My workshop will be primarily experiential, offering participants an opportunity to engage directly with issues of governance and sociocratic structure and process in real-life contexts. Essential content delivery on values, principles etc. will be as interactive as possible. Relevance will be focused on intentional communities (and creating and maintaining community in general). Most workshop time will be used for exercises that engage workshop participants with both Art of Community conference themes and sociocratic approaches to governance.
